You are now in the website of one of the best preserved and ancient forts
of Kerala - The Bakel fort.. in the Kasaragod
district. On a vast 35acre headland that runs into the Arabian Sea just
6kms away from the nearest town Kanhangad and 60kms south to a major town
- Mangalore, stands the Bakel Fort, an imposing circular structure of
laterite rising 130ft above sea level. More than 300 years old, the fort
has a chequered history, making it an interesting excavation site. Owing
to its historic importance, the Bakel Fort is now under the control of
The Archaelogical Survey of India. The Bakel Fort is largest and
best preserved of its kind in Kerala. |
